The heath unit that serves Northumberland County is warning people that this is “prime time” for Lyme disease.
The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge heath unit is urging people to avoid blacklegged ticks, also known as deer ticks, that carry the bacteria that causes the disease.
Public Heath officials recommend people wear closed footwear and socks when walking through tall grass, and to use insect repellent.
Spokesman Richard Ovcharvich says anyone outdoors should check themselves for ticks when coming inside.
Central and eastern parts of Northumberland County are considered “high risk” areas for the blacklegged tick. Blackleggged ticks are known to live in these areas.
