Another step is underway toward the proposed future development of an apartment building on Belleville’s Dundas Street West.
Developer Ishvar Ghuman is proposing a six-storey, 120-unit retirement residence on the site at 24 Dundas Street West.
At its meeting this week, city council approved financial assistance for the investigation and remediation of environmental contamination of the land, at a cost of $17,300, under the city’s Brownfields Plan Program.
The program allows for $20,000 support for a project or 50% of the cost, whichever is less.
Conditions of the approval include the fact the developer must submit paid invoices to show the work has been done before the funds are provided.
A staff report to the city’s planning committee had said the results of the environmental site remediation will indicate the relative likelihood that the other programs – the building permit grant, developer charge grant, and assistance grant programs, will be necessary.
It continued the committee should be satisfied the proponent is genuine in intent to assess mediation requirements as part of redeveloping the property rather than enhancing the value without development occurring and the city achieving the subsequent benefit.
The committee had recommended approval to city council.
A site plan has been submitted for staff review.
