The official start of fishing season in the Quinte area went smoothly this past weekend.
Officers with the Ontario Provincial Police Marine Unit, Prince Edward County OPP and the East Region S.A.V.E. Unit patrolled the Bay of Quinte and other waters in the area for the annual Trenton Kiwanis Walleye World Tournament.
No major incidents were reported and the following is a summary of the weekend.
Friday, May 4
Shoreline/Launch boat safety checks and education – four boats were prevented from launching for noncompliance, two for insufficient life jackets/PFDs.
Forty-six km/h winds, risk of thunder storms caused unsafe conditions and the marine patrol to exit the water.
Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6
Patrols on the Bay of Quinte – Trenton, Picton, Napanee.
High Compliance – no major incidents.
One boat rescue – broken down near Trenton.
One Canada Shipping Act charge for speeding through the no wake zone.
Six minor Canada Shipping Act warnings.
No alcohol violations.
No life jacket violations.
Marine patrol officers advised approximately 300 vessels were checked at launches and on the water.
