After a long and confusing discussion, Prince Edward County council’s Committee of the Whole has sent the issue of tax relief for some young or startup farmers to its existing Agricultural Advisory Committee.
Council had been considering creating a new ad hoc committee on the issue, but most now believe that would simply delay solutions and be a waste of time.
The advisory committee would be bolstered by one member of the National Farmers Union.
The committee will immediately begin work to report back to council soon on options to provide some tax relief to young or startup farmers.
One of those might be a 20% rebate on farm taxes. Grants of some kind might also be provided.
It’s hoped some type of relief program will be in place for this tax year.
