The Bay of Quinte just off of Herchimer Avenue in east end Belleville was a busy spot today (Saturday).
Despite above freezing temperatures the ice was plenty thick enough for the second annual Cops, Kids and Ice Fishing Derby organized
by the Belleville Police Association and Belleville Police Service.
Well over 150 kids under the age of 12 along with parents and caregivers tried for “the big one” in a very stiff and very refreshing west wind.
Belleville Police Constable Pat Comeau said when kids, parents, police officers, paramedics, firefighters, military members, volunteers and others were counted there were around 400 people at the event, significantly more than at the inaugural derby last year.
As of 10:15 this morning, not many anglers had landed a fish, never mind “the big one.”
However that was expected to change as Constable Comeau and Chief Ron Gignac were organizing “perch patrols” to round-up some finicky finned friends.
