Municipalities across Ontario are turning their attention to the serious need to recruit new employees.
Hastings County CEO Jim Pine told delegates at the recent Rural Ontario Municipal Association conference 12,000 municipal employees are soon eligible for retirement in eastern Ontario.
Speaking at a Hastings County council meeting Thursday, he said there is a need to explain the advantages of municipal work to prospective employees.
He says there are several hundred employees eligible to retire across Hastings County soon, so the County has to promote itself.
Indicating there will be competition for qualified people, he emphasized this will be an issue for the next term of council “for sure.”
Pine says there is a local plan in place to recruit people.
