Belleville has decided to hold the police services tax rate for Ward 2 at the present rate, but not without some opposition at Monday night’s city council meeting.
Council made the decision on a recorded vote of six to three.
Councillor Jack Miller, opposed the move,
He pointed out they were all residents of the city
Councillor Egerton Boyce argued for an increase. He said, “We need to be one city. We need to bite the bullet on this.”
The tax rate in Ward 2 would have jumped by $500 if the police tax rate had been made the same as in the urban area.
A staff report shows more than 92% of police calls are in the urban Belleville area.
