UPDATE at 10:32 a.m.: Highway 401 re-opened.
The weather was expected to make our roadways a mess last night and a mess they are.
All westbound lanes of Hwy 401 are now open from Wooler Road through to the Colborne exit.
At 10: 30pm last night Northumberland OPP responded to a multi vehicle crash in the westbound lanes at the Brighton exit (#509) involving two tractor trailers and three vehicles.
Four people were transported to hospital, one with life threatening injuries.
OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators/Reconstructionists attended and are assisting with the investigation.
As a result of the detours, tractor trailers got stuck on County Road 40 (Wooler Road) and on Carman Road.
At 2 this morning, OPP reported over 100 vehicles backed up on Wooler Road.
Motorists are to expect delays as traffic clears.
Around 9:20 a.m. reports stated a multi-vehicle collision had occurred on the eastbound 401, east of Cannifton Road in Belleville.
About 90 minutes east of Belleville, Highway 401 at Prescott was shut down both east and west last night after a crash involving multiple tractor trailers. It’s reported there was a toxic chemical spill.
