While Hastings County council quickly approved moving ahead with a 40-unit assisted housing apartment building on Sidney Street in Belleville on Tuesday, the discussion spurred questions from politicians asking when special needs housing would be built in the northern part of the county.
The Mayor of Hastings Highlands, Vivian Bloom, said many people in the north really need affordable housing.
Last week, a 66-year-old woman froze to death in Hastings Highlands as she was unable to afford electricity bills.
Mayor Bloom says people need to understand Hastings County can and will help them.
The woman who died was generally healthy but had taken a fall and was unable to get to her feet.
