A final list of names is out for an amalgamated secondary school in east end Belleville, which opens in September.
So what is the new school going to be called, once students of Moira and Quinte Secondary join? It will not be Moira or Quinte.
Over 200 people submitted 314 names for consideration and the Integration Committee has taken it down to five.
They are Myers Creek Secondary, East Side High School, East Hill Secondary, Belleville East Secondary, or Gord Downie Secondary School. That name is pending family approval.
Downie, the front man for The Tragically Hip, died earlier this year, following a battle with cancer. Downie, a resident of Kingston, has played Belleville several times (Big Music Fest x2, The Empire Theatre). He is also one of the most talked about Canadians over the past several years.
Input on the school name will be allowed until December 12th, then the committee will select a final name to be put forward to the board for approval in January.
The Moira Secondary School and Quinte Secondary students will amalgamate at either a newly built school in the east end, or a renovated Moira Secondary site (it will be renamed either way).
