United Way HPE announces that they have reached over 50% of their $1,970,000 goal. They are continuing to challenge the community to support its fellow community members, who are facing difficult and vulnerable circumstances. “At this time of giving, we are honored that the community continues to come forward to support those in need…..but we still have a ways to go,” said Kathy Murphy, Executive Director.
This community led campaign has currently raised more than $1.1 million, and many campaigns are wrapping up in early to mid- December. These important dollars provided by the local community go towards supporting agencies and programs that give a “hand up” versus a “hand out” to many in need. Weeks ago, at Deseronto Transit’s 10th anniversary, Mayor Norman Clark recalled a man who needed to find a way to get to work from his rural home. Deseronto Transit (one of 75 United Way funded programs) provided this important transportation service, allowing Dave to gain employment, and remain working. Mayor Clark further recalls speaking to Dave some time later, and learning he earned enough money to eventually buy his own vehicle.
This “hand up” for Dave and many others, allows fellow citizens in Prince Edward and Hastings Counties their independence and dignity, while participating in the economy. “Every one of us is equally deserving of a dignified life,” says Ms. Murphy.
Money raised remains 100% local and stays here in Hastings and Prince Edward counties, serving one in three people in need.
