Belleville’s council chambers are expected to be full Monday afternoon as the city’s Planning Advisory Committee discusses a proposed residential development along Farnham Road, at Maitland Drive.
Owners of the vacant one acre site are asking for a rezoning to allow for 3 semi-detached homes and one 3 storey 19 unit apartment building.
This property was recently sold by Mayor Taso Christopher and his brother and was at the centre of a conflict of interest case brought by a citizen against the mayor.
Ten residents in the neighbourhood have formally written the city protesting the development plans.
Residents’ concerns include increased traffic, privacy, and drainage. A roundabout is planned at Farnham and Maitland in the near future.
City staff are recommending approval for the rezoning. Staff maintain the area is in for steady residential growth and that traffic from an additional 25 residential units won’t be significant considering the big picture.
Belleville’s Planning Advisory Committee meets at 5:30 Monday afternoon in council chambers.
