Picton Terminals has been handed a Provincial Officer’s Order by the Ministry of Environment, mandating the company to take care of a number of uncovered salt piles on the property, which the ministry says violate the Environmental Protection Act.
The citizen’s group Save Picton Bay forwarded the order to Quinte News Wednesday afternoon.
The order stems from inspections and testing dating back to May of 2015, which have showed high levels of chloride and sodium in storm water in the area.
The MOE has issued seven requirements for the company, including having all salt piles covered by November 24, hiring someone to prepare an interim action plan on how to handle the issue moving forward and having that plan in place by December 8.
The MOE says it has received up to 72 individual complaints about the property during that time.
