UPDATE @ 1:35 p.m.: The Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate after a crash involving an OPP cruiser in Belleville last night.
Five people were hurt, including two officers and a person in their custody, after the police SUV and another car collided at Dundas Street West and Sidney Streets.
The crash happened around 10:30 p.m. and sent the cruiser into a hydro pole.
The intersection of Sidney Street and Dundas West is expected to be closed for the remainder of the day and drivers are asked to avoid the area to ease any traffic backlogs.
You should use Palmer Road and Bridge Street, or Wallbridge-Loyalist Road and Moira Street to get around the scene.
The SIU is called to investigate any incident involving police where someone is killed, seriously injured, or makes a complaint about sexual assault involving an officer.
