The province’s Special Investigations Unit is involved, and an elderly married couple is dead following gunfire in the Northumberland Hills Hospital’s emergency department late last night (Friday).
Cobourg Police responded to the hospital around 11 last night after staff reported a single gunshot in the emergency room.
According to Northumberland News, the woman was suffering from a wound to her head.
Police officers arrived in the emergency room and encountered a 70 year old man, and both officers fired their weapons.
The man and woman were pronounced dead at the scene.
No one else was injured.
The report says the husband and wife were side by side on separate gurneys and no one else was in the area.
The OPP is investigating the death of the woman, while the SIU is investigating the death of the man.
The Special Investigations Unit investigates reports where there has been serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault involving police.
