In the wake of the deaths of three workers at an arena in BC over an ammonia leak, no chances were taken this week in Deseronto.
Quinte News has confirmed the town’s arena had an ammonia leak in the refrigeration room overnight Tuesday.
A town employee says that the ammonia detection unit had been recommended for an upgrade, prior to the leak.
Deputy Mayor Dan Johnston says the arena was closed, while officials investigated.
Johnston says the fans in the building were unable to keep up with the leak and although the rink was closed, no member of the public was ever in any danger.
The arena was re-opened Thursday and regular programming in the facility resumed.
Johnston adds that they will ensure the equipment is in proper working order, and will be vigilant, especially in the wake of the tragedy in BC, where three people died in an arena following an ammonia leak.
