Heavy rainfall and flooding caused problems at some beaches in Hastings and Prince Edward counties this summer.
A report to the Hastings Prince Edward Board of Health this week shows five beaches were posted by public health officials because of bacterial contamination.
Senior public health inspector John Cannan told the board that warm temperatures, and shallow water related to high winds and wave action, stirred up beach sands and mats of algae that harbour E-coli bacteria.
Cannan said large flocks of birds were noted at several beaches and said “if you don’t want birds don’t have a chip wagon right there.”
The five beaches that were posted are Frankford Park, Kingsford Conservation Area, Centennial Park, Tweed Park and Wellington Beach.
