The issue of who pays what for police service in the City of Belleville is one that’s come up a few times ever since the amalgamation of the former city with Thurlow Township years ago.
And, it’s coming up again.
The city is holding two public information sessions on what’s called “area rating” on tax support for the police service.
Councillor Jackie Denyes, who represents Thurlow ward, is urging residents to show up at the meetings.

Options on how to pay for police service include the status quo, complete elimination of area rating, a phasing out of area rating, and paying on an assessment basis.
Right now, urban Belleville taxpayers pay 96% of the police department’s budget, with rural residents picking up the other 4%.
Public meetings on the issue are scheduled for October 11 at the Gerry Masterson Community Centre in Thurlow and October 12 in city council chambers.
Sessions will run from 7 until 9 p.m.
