Belleville city council is expected to make a decision this afternoon (Monday) on whether to continue, eliminate, or phase out property tax rebates for vacant commercial or industrial space.
Currently, property owners are eligible for a 30% tax rebate on vacant commercial space or 35% on industrial vacancies.
The vacancy tax rebates amounted to around $500,000 including both municipal and education taxes recently in Belleville.
Local councils now have the power to eliminate the rebates if they wish.
However, at a public meeting recently, most people, many property owners, supported keeping the rebates.
Chief Executive Officer of the Belleville and District Chamber of Commerce, Jill Raycroft, will speak to council on the issue at its regular meeting this afternoon starting at 4 at City Hall.
