Financial support will be considered at a future date, but Prince Edward County council is enthusiastically in support of a citizen led initiative to create a community-driven food hub in vacant space at Sophiasburgh Central School.
Sophiasburgh school had been slated to close due to low enrolment however the local drive to have a community kitchen, gardens, and other space has left the school open, at least temporarily.
Councillor Kevin Gale says provincial government officials at a recent conference were very interested in the community food hub concept.
Council voted to provide staff time and expertise to the organizing group, and will discuss any financial support during budget discussions for next year.
Detailed business plans for the hub need to be ready by spring of next year.
