The plans have been in the works for more than a year, and now the search is underway.
Friday morning, on the south shores of Prince Edward County, researchers, archeologists and supporters of the Raise the Arrow project launched equipment to locate models of the Avro Arrow.
In the 50s, nine models were fired on rockets in Lake Ontario, to understand more about the proposed interceptor to the Russian fighter.
John Burzynski is the expedition leader and says they are using state of the art sonar technology from Kraken Sonar. The equipment costs about $2 million.
He says they are searching just off the south shore of Point Petre.
Burzynski adds they have done searches in the past, but not with this kind of technology.
Archeologist Scarlett Janusas says they do not know what condition the models are in.
Jenusas says the sonar equipment will help locate these models.
The search is expected to last several weeks.
The first one located will go to the Aerospace Museum in Ottawa, the second, the National Air Force Museum of Canada in Trenton.
Burzynski says this is his Canada 150 project.
