The International St. Lawrence River Board of Control says it’s continuing to release “unprecedented outflow” from Lake Ontario, as high water levels continue.
The board has been releasing 10,000 cubic metres per second throughout much of the water system with the intent of providing relief to shoreline property owners, while also balancing the impacts on other affected stakeholders.
Officials say increasing outflows any further would only improve water levels by inches and would lead to unsafe conditions for ships, or possibly halt navigation altogether.
Because of those reasons, the board will keep outflows at the current rate and will monitor conditions, as water levels are expected to continue decreasing into the fall and winter.
