(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – This coming weekend, July 8 and 9, the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Marine Unit and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) will be participating in a joint initiative designed to educate the public and enforce various equipment, water safety and fishing statutes on Rice Lake.
They encourage all Ontarians to take personal responsibility for ensuring water safety for themselves and their children. It is important for everyone to be aware of proper boating and swimming practices. Use of an approved lifejacket or PFD is well documented to dramatically increase your chances of surviving a boating incident. Fact: Most vessel-related drownings occur in small open powerboats and non-motorized boats such as canoes or similar vessels.
Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry Conservation Officers check for compliance with natural resource and public safety laws. It is important for the public enjoying fishing activities to be safe and to be aware of the rules and regulations for this activity. Everyone needs to do their part to keep the province’s world-class recreational fisheries both healthy and sustainable. Please follow the rules around licences, seasons, limits, sizes, transport and bait usage. The public is reminded that fish need to be cleaned and packaged so that the number and species can easily be determined.
