Plans to build a new bridge in Campbellford are moving forward.
An environmental assessment on the project, to create a second river crossing, has been approved and a timeline is being put together for the design and construction of the new structure.
The new bridge will be built about 400 metres south of the existing Bridge Street Bridge, between Alma Street and Second Street and must meet four conditions.
The build must follow all protocols set out in the environmental assessment, a road salt risk management plan must be created, bike lanes should be included in the final design and the ministry has to approve that design before construction can begin.
Northumberland County officials say adding a second bridge will serve three main functions.
It will allow for a continuous river crossing when the old bridge is demolished and replaced, will help solve some traffic-related issues and will generate new opportunities for economic growth.
