Padre Sid Horne died today(Sunday) at the age of 94.
He became an army Chaplain in Moose Jaw. Saskatchewan in 1953.
He was posted to CFB Trenton in 1971.
Padre Horne was the padre for the Hastings and Prince Edward Regimental Association for years.
He was the pastor for the Tyendinaga Mohawk Church in Deseronto for years after leaving the regular force He was well respected there by the band council Chief Don Maracle gave a moving speech at Sid’s retirement party.
Padre Horne, as he was known in the community, retired from CFB Trenton in 1980 but continued his work with the Royal Canadian Legions in Trenton and Frankford and was appointed an Honourary Chaplain at the base.
Until very recently, the Padre continued to appear at public events and led the Remembrance Day ceremonies in Trenton for many years. He was a tall man with a commanding presence and a deep, powerful voice.
Known as “everybody’s Padre” because of his sense of humour and common touch, Padre Horne was honoured with the dedication of a stained glass window in his name at his home church, St. George’s Anglican in Trenton, back in 2009.
He is resting at Weaver Funeral Home.
