Prince Edward County staff will be applying to be part of a good-will and professional development program, to help improve economic development in parts of rural South Africa.
The County was identified as a perfect participant by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, to take part in the Building Inclusive Green Municipalities Program and council approved the application process by an 8-7 vote Tuesday night.
Director of Community Development Neil Carbone tells Quinte News the program involves sending staff overseas and having visitors from South Africa, a couple of times a year, to share knowledge and best practices.
If accepted, PEC would be one of six towns to take part in the program over three years.
While not all councillors agreed on the idea, Mayor Robert Quaiff says The County has seen benefits from similar programs in the past and being part of the program casts a positive light on the municipality.
The program won’t cost the municipality any extra money, other than paying staff time while they’re out of the country.
