The province’s Special Investigations Unit says no charges will be laid against Belleville Police, after a 30 year-old man jumped to his death, from a Sidney Street apartment building last year.
Officers responded to the Albert Park building in the city’s west end on the evening of February 26, 2016 after reports of an assault and were met by the occupants of the 9th floor unit outside.
SIU investigators say police entered the apartment and noted numerous signs an assault had taken place and that the suspect may have violated a number of bail conditions.
The SIU report says when officers asked him to come out into the hall, the man stepped onto a chair and jumped out the window and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Along with numerous pieces of physical evidence, including blunt force injuries consistent with a fall from height, witnesses told investigators that at no point was there ever any physical contact between responding officers and the victim.
The SIU is called to investigate any incident of injury or death during a police investigation.
