A long-time local philanthropist was recognized by the United Way of Hastings and Prince Edward Counties at the organization’s annual general meeting on Tuesday.
Maurice Rollins was honoured for personally donating $400,000 to the local United Way since 2008, through the Maurice Rollins Leadership Challenge, where he matches donations of $1,000 or more.
Executive Director Kathy Murphy tells Quinte News, he’s been able to leverage more than a million dollars in donations through that program.
Murphy says the $1,000 donations are the fastest growing segment of the United Way’s annual campaign, which was able to raise close to $2 million, for 37 different agencies, to fund 54 programs last year.
She adds, she has only been with the organization since March, but it didn’t take long to notice the generosity of donors in the Quinte Region.
Murphy noted Proctor and Gamble was the agency’s largest fundraiser last year, raising more than $500,000 and staff at CFB Trenton who were the group’s second largest donor in 2016.
