Belleville police are urging the public to use caution when posting or re-posting on social media following a report of a suspicious vehicle in the east end of the city with two females inside.
On May 17, police received a call from a concerned parent that a Chevrolet Impala was parked on a road near where children were playing. The vehicle left the area before police arrived.
Following an investigation police located the vehicle and the females were spoken to and their actions were 100 percent innocent and they just happened to be stopped near the children.
“Unfortunately the story has gained traction on social media to the point where other similar vehicles were photographed and posted, warning people to be aware of the occupants and accused them of trying to abduct children,” said Staff Sergeant Rene Aubertin. “This is 100 percent false.”
The Belleville Police recommend parents keep an eye on their children and to contact police if they report any suspicious activity.
However, if there is concern for safety or if a subject vehicle is sought, police will request that assistance from the public through the media in a formal request.
