The Wellington Dukes proved the old adage of the playoffs being a new season is more than just a cliche.
Whitby native Mitch Martan scored twice and OJHL Goaltender of the Month Connor Ryckman stopped 32 shots as the Dukes dumped favoured Whitby 3-0 in game one of their best of 7 series. It’s Wellington’s first win over the Fury this season. And it was a big night for Martan who was playing in his hometown.
It was also Ryckman’s first shutout of the year although Wellington Coach and General Manager Marty Abrams wasn’t surprised.
Game 2 is tonight at the Essroc Arena in Wellington.
Tonight in Trenton the Golden Hawks begin defence of their OJHL championship as they host the Newmarket Hurricanes in the opener of their series. Game time is 7:30 at the Dunc McDonald Community Gardens. CJBQ’s broadcast for Eastern Overhead Doors begins at 7:20.
The Provincial Junior “C” championship series between Napanee and the Panthers opens tomorrow night in Port Hope. Game 2 is Sunday in Napanee. Both games start at 7:30.
