Hastings and Prince Edward Public Health says it’s investigating a case of Pertussis, or whooping cough, at a local school.
The health unit says it is working to notify staff and parents of the situation and that all students enrolled at the school in question, will be provided written information on symptoms, immunization status and vaccination opportunities.
Pertussis is highly contagious and can spread by coughing or sneezing.
Health care professionals say symptoms start with a runny nose and cough and can escalate to gagging, vomiting or trouble breathing and a high pitched “whooping” sound can be heard.
If you have any questions, or suspect your child has come down with Pertussis, you can contact Hastings and Prince Edward Public Health.
