Two hockey clubs looking for money from Quinte West council received different reactions from politicians last night (Wednesday).
The city’s Corporate Finance Committee recommended council give a total of $85,000 to the Trenton Golden Hawks Junior A team.
$75,000 of that total is a one time grant to help the club run the Dudley Hewitt Memorial tournament in May. The other $10,000 will help
the team as it hosts OJHL Showcase tournaments in January.
Meanwhile, the Trenton Nomads oldtimers hockey club asked the Committee for $5,000 to help it pay the costs of its annual oldtimers
tournament.
Quinte West Mayor Jim Harrison chastised Nomad representative Bill Bryant, suggesting the team should raise money itself as it always had done.
He suggested the club “lacked ambition”.
Bryant agreed the Nomads had made some mistakes and had mismanaged some situations, but that better days were on the way.
In the end, the Committee recommended $2,000for the Nomads, instead of the $5,000.
