The northern part of Belleville is a safer area thanks to a new fire station officially opened Saturday in Plainfield.
Belleville station 5 was completed slightly ahead of time and slightly under the $550,000 budget.
Taskforce Engineering of Belleville was praised for its good work on the project.
Fire Chief Mark MacDonald said that not only would the new hall improve response time, it will serve as a community hub as its training area and meeting room will be available for public use.
Thurlow ward Councillor Jackie Denyes was repeatedly thanked for her persistent efforts to improve the fire service in the rural part of the city.
About 150 people jammed the new station for the grand opening.
Fire station #5 will house a pumper and a tanker truck.
