It will be a while yet before the 37 people who lived in a Belleville apartment building will be allowed to return to their homes.
Late Friday afternoon, a building on Turnbull Street, just north of the Dairy Queen shop, suffered heavy smoke and heat damage after fire broke out in a second floor apartment.
Everyone managed to escape safely, with Belleville firefighters rescuing several people from the second floor.
The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office is helping with the investigation and the cause has yet to be determined.
The damage to the building could be as high as $275,000.
Fortunately, most of the tenants had insurance on their belongings.
