Belleville Fire and Emergency Services responded to multiple 911 calls for a structure fire on Turnbull Street at approximately 4:30 p.m. on November 4, 2016.
When fire crews arrived on scene they encountered flames and heavy smoke conditions on the second floor of the building. Firefighters rescued eight tenants from the second floor of the building that were unable to escape due to heavy smoke conditions in the hallways.
Although the second floor suffered major smoke damage, the fire was contained to the apartment of origin.
One person was transported to Belleville General Hospital with smoke inhalation, but they were later released.
All 37 tenants from this property have been displaced by the fire. Some have been able to stay with friends and family, and others have been provided lodging and assistance by the local Red Cross Agency.
There is no damage estimate available at this time and the investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
