It’s a significant step in completing work along Dundas Street in Belleville, as the new Bay Bridge Road bridge is officially open.
Traffic is being routed onto the new bridge, as of this afternoon, so the old bridge over the railway tracks can be removed.
Since there’s still some work to be completed, traffic will be shifted onto the east side of the bridge until that’s done.
Officials at Belleville City Hall say even though work in the Dundas and Bay Bridge Road area will continue into next year, opening the new bridge should significantly increase the traffic flow in that area.
Demolition of the existing Bay Bridge Road structure will start on Monday.
