A fireplace caused yesterday’s house fire on highway 37 near Harmony Road in Thurlow.
Deputy Fire Chief Bruce Greatrix says a fire in the fireplace spread into a wall and up into the attic.
A passerby on the highway, a volunteer firefighter from Kaladar, noticed smoke, and ended up calling 9-1-1 as the homes owner, a retired man, didn’t have a phone.
The older brick back-split was gutted and at least 200 thousand dollars damage was done.
No one was injured.
The home was not insured.
