The issue of excessive lighting from a pair of businesses in Wellington was brought before Prince Edward County committee of the whole Thursday.
In her deputation, resident Karen Pluzak told the committee the Nuisance, Property Standards and the Signage by-laws are being broken and not enforced by the County regarding 16 lights shining for 18 hours a day on and around the Tim Hortons and MacEwen commercial property in the village.
Pluzak tells Quinte News she is sleep deprived as seven lights from the business (directly across the street from her house) plus three street lights shine in her house until 11 p.m. and turn on again at 5 a.m.
Pluzak’s neighbour Chris Bowles who has also complained to the by-law office addressed the committee.
“16 lights. It’s crazy!” he exclaimed. It’s causing a lot of aggravation to a lot of people.”
Bowles said he has lost two rose bushes and a tree because they are being ‘over stimulated.’ He added he has had to spend $700 to ‘blacken’ his house where the lights are coming in.
Commissioner of Engineering, Development and Works Robert McAuley confirmed the issue has been reported to the by-law office. He said the matter is being looked at to determine what changes need to be made.
The committee carried a motion to accept Pluzak’s deputation and Bowles comments.
