Belleville council is backing many farmers in Ontario who are concerned new regulations by the province could hurt their pocketbooks.
The provincial government has legislation ready next year that would not allow Certified Crop Advisors to inspect farmers fields for pests if they were being paid by a retailer or manufacturer of a certain kind of pesticide for fear of bias in their recommendations.
Belleville councillor Jackie Denyes explained that the new regulations would cut the number of crop advisors from over 300 to around 80.
Denyes, who has a farm background, says the cutback would mean many farmers could not use certain pesticides and that would be devastating.
Council supported a resolution to stop the regulation so as to allow Ontario farmers the freedom to engage in business with the expert of their choice.
