Central Hastings OPP are warning residents about a telephone hydro scam circulating in the Marmora area.
The caller alleged the resident had an outstanding bill of over $1000 and if payment wasn’t forwarded immediately their power would be disconnected.
When the resident went to purchase a money gram to send the payment, an employee with Canada Post assisted in identifying the incident as a scam and prevented the resident from being defrauded.
Central Hastings OPP would like to remind residents of some tips to protect you from fraud.
•Don’t disclose personal information about your finances, bank accounts, credit cards, social insurance and driver’s license numbers to any business that can’t prove it is legitimate.
•Shred unwanted personal information such as bank statements, credit card bills, unwanted receipts, cheques, pre-approved credit applications and old tax returns.
• If you have doubts about a caller, your best defence is to simply hang up. It’s not rude – it’s smart.
• If you’re in doubt, it’s wise to ask the advice of a close friend or relative, or even your banker. Rely on people you can trust.
Remember, you can Stop Phone Fraud – Just Hang Up!
