An appeal to the Assessment Review Board has resulted in a 6% bump in payments from three provincial parks to Prince Edward County.
In 2012, the County appealed the assessment for the four Provincial Parks located in the County – Sandbanks, Lake on the Mountain, North Beach and Timber Island. The appeal for Lake on the Mountain was withdrawn. In recent years, Mayor Robert Quaiff has been extremely vocal on the need for a reassessment given how popular the parks are, especially the frequently packed to capacity Sandbanks that results in wear and tear on the County’s already exhausted roadways.
An Assessment Review Board mediated settlement reached with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and the Municipal Property Assessment
Corporation resulted in a 6% increase. This results in an additional $151,000 in Payment in Lieu of Taxes to be received in 2016 minus $39,000 in legal and consulting costs.
Mayor Quaiff sighed it’s better than nothing.
The mayor said the funds will be put into infrastructure reserves.
After discussions with residents and farmers around the Outlet Beach he echoed previous statements that there needs to be more of a focus on upgrading County Road 12.
