Students at a Belleville elementary school will be moving next month.
The Algonquin Lakeshore Catholic District School Board announced Monday that Our Lady of Fatima students will start the 2016-17 school year at George Vanier.
The reason for the move is due to environmental concerns at the Fatima location on Sidney Street, beside the site of the former Nortel building (now Strathcona Energy and Avaya).
Quinte News has learned there are contaminants in the soil at the Avaya property and low levels of contaminants on the school property.
A source says the contaminant levels are low and do not pose a public health hazard and adds the board is likely taking precaution in the decision.
Portables are being set up at George Vanier on Tracey Street to accommodate the students until work at Fatima is complete.
The Catholic board is currently performing upgrades at Fatima and once complete, the students will return to their home school.
No time frame for completion has been given.
