Canada will send 313 athletes to the Rio Summer Olympic games next week but just one from the Quinte area.
Belleville born Brit Benn is on the Canadian Womens Olympic Rugby 7’s squad.
Benn spent five years at the University of Guelph where she won five OUA gold medals, three CIS bronze, two CIS silvers and one national championship title. The 27 year old Napanee native was the Canadian University Women’s Rugby player of the year in 2012 where she also received the Pioneer OUA Female Athlete of the Year award. Benn won a gold medal with Canada at last year’s Pan Am Games in Toronto.
Rugby 7’s is making its debut at the Summer Games. Head coach John Tait says the Canadian women are peaking at the right time.
Canada is considered a legitimate medal contender in Womens’ Rugby 7’s.
