Blazing hot weather was a major obstacle for nine community sponsors to compete through at the 2016 Firefit Corporate Challenge in Belleville on Friday evening.
The event, held at the Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre, kicked off a three day weekend of festivities by allowing nine teams of local partners to participate in grueling and intense events that fire crews go through on a daily basis.
Teams raced against each other and the clock with the winning team and the team that collects the most money receiving trophies and plaques.
In the end, it was Donahoe Advantage that squeaked out the fastest time over the crew from Bell Canada in the Gold Medal Race at 1:19:32. However, Bell Canada was the team that raised the most money, taking off one second from their time with every $25 raised. They finished with a time of 1:04:85.
Bell Canada Team Captain Mike Snell says he gained a lot of inspiration from a loved one to do the event.
A total of $4,585 was raised by all nine teams. All proceeds will go to the Belleville Firefighter’s Toy Drive.
Snell said supporting the toy drive is a very important part of the event for he and his teammates.
Pathways to Independence clinched bronze medals. Other participants included Proctor & Gamble, the Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre Staff, Templeman & Menninga, the crew from Starbucks, the Teachers of Quinte Secondary School and Trillium College.
Quinte Broadcasting’s own Tim Durkin was the master of ceremonies of the event.
The Southern Ontario Regional event continues Saturday with the Individual Event and wraps up Sunday with the Relay and X3 competitions. Both day’s events start at 11 a.m. and are free to the public.
