This hot summer has been a perfect swimming summer but health officials say people should take precautions to avoid “swimmers’ itch.”
The condition called swimmers’ itch is caused by a parasite which commonly affects birds and snails.
Director of health protection for Hastings Prince Edward health unit, Eric Serwotka, says the “fairly harmless” parasite burrows into the top level of skin.
He suggests these remedies.
Serwotka says the symptoms usually last a couple of days.
He says the parasites are usually found in marshy areas of fresh water lakes.
