Nearly two years ago a Parks Canada underwater archeologist, Ryan Harris, found the HMS Erebus, one of British explorer Sir John Franklin’s ships that left England 160 years ago and disappeared in Canada’s Arctic waters.
Harris and the Parks Canada team had searched for six years and are now carefully exploring the shipwreck which has been very well-preserved in the cold Arctic.
Harris, a guest on CJBQ’s Newsmaker Sunday program this week, tells host Mary Thomas that, so far, they have brought up many small items, such as a sailor’s personal medicine vial that had been put to a new use.
Harris tells about his plans for this summer, probably in August, to once more spend hours under the surface in the dark, cold waters, carefully exploring the historical site and possibly finding diaries or other evidence of the lost sailors.
You can hear the entire interview this Sunday, on Newsmaker Sunday, broadcast at the noon hour on 800 CJBQ.
