One of the “Founding Fathers” of the Montreal Canadiens will be honoured in Belleville next week.
Jean Baptiste Jack Laviolette, was born and raised in Belleville and became the first player-manager and captain of the Canadiens. Laviolette led the team to its first Stanley Cup in 1916. Laviolette, Newsy Lalonde and “Cannonball Pitre will be honoured in their respective hometowns by the Ontario Heritage Trust.
The ceremony in Belleville is next Thursday June 23rd at 11 at the Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre and is being co-ordinated by the city and the Hastings County Historical Society. President Richard Hughes.
Hughes says the event is open to the public.
Jack Laviolette is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame and the Belleville Sports Hall of Fame.
