On Sunday June 12th, 2016, at approximately 7:45 p.m. officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Quinte West Detachment were dispatched to an address on Belvedere Road in Trenton. A 29 year old Trenton man had barricaded himself inside his residence and made threats to destroy the residence.
The incident began as a domestic dispute, but only the man was in the house as the incident unfolded.
OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT), Tactical Response Unit (TRU), Crisis Negotiation teams, Canine Unit and Criminal Investigation Branch (C IB) were utilized. The OPP support teams, along with Quinte West Fire and Ambulance staged close by at Trenton High School.
At approximately 10:30 p.m. the City of Quinte West issued a PRISM 911 alert to nearby residents to lock their doors and stay inside. The neighbourhood was not evacuated.
On Monday June 13th, 2016, shortly after 1:00 a.m. the lone barricaded man was safely arrested by the OPP Tactical Response Unit. There were no injuries. A PRISM alert cancellation went out at approximately 1:30 a.m. Residents, schools, and businesses in the area are safe to return to their normal daily activities.
The investigation is continuing at this time. The accused man remains in custody and will appear in court today at the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville. The name of the accused is being withheld to protect the identity of the victim(s).
