Belleville city council opened it’s meeting Monday night with a minute of silence for the victims of the mass shooting in an Orlando, Florida gay bar on the weekend.
Mayor Taso Christopher made this comment to Quinte News following the meeting.
More bike lanes
Belleville is preparing to move it’s bicycle lane system in the north-south direction.
Last night, city council decided to ban parking on North Park from College Street East to Bell Boulevard allowing a bike lane to be created on the street.
Bike lane proponent Councillor Egerton Boyce says this avoids the traffic on North Front.

The set-up would be the same as the recently-opened lanes on Yeomans Street, in the west end.
Skateboarding issue
A request by Belleville’s Downtown Improvement Area for regulations on skateboarding in the city centre has been passed on to staff.
The BDIA’s Erica Holgate tells Quinte News, Belleville is one of a few cities that doesn’t already have a downtown skateboarding by-law and they want to protect the new work in the city core.
Holgate says BDIA wants a by-law that will ask skateboarders to walk with their boards in the downtown and not ride them.
Council took no other action on the matter.
Canada Day celebrations
Plans for Belleville’s Canada Day celebrations at Zwicks Park are well underway.
Spokesperson Marilyn Lowrie told city council last night the opening ceremonies will officially kick off the day at 12-noon, with a flypast from 8 wing CFB Trenton.
Food vendors and the canteen open in the morning with lots of activities for children including the Belleville fire department’s Wacky Waterslide.
The main stage sponsored by Mix97, CJBQ and Rock 107 will have a long list of entertainers including hits from the 60s and 70s.
Parking will be $5 this year to discourage motorists because of the construction in the area, but there will be a bus service to Zwicks Park.
