While the Hastings and Prince Edward School Board says it contains no formal recommendations for closing or consolidating schools at this point, there are some potential ideas along those lines that have been added to a draft long term accommodation and capital plan.
One idea that could move forward down the line is the possible merger of Trenton and Bayside High Schools, into one school on the Bayside property, in order to address capacity and enrolment issues at both schools.
There are also thoughts about closing Bayside Elementary and building a new school, or adding on to Bayside, to incorporate grade seven and eight students currently taking their classes at the high school.
There’s also a potential plan to cut the number of elementary schools in Trenton from four, to three, once the new school there is finished.
The draft report, which you can read by clicking here, totals about 125 pages and will help the board address any issues in the years to come, in areas like programming, facilities, declining enrolment and others.
The plan is supposed to be a “framework for decision making” and a “living document” which will be monitored and updated as required.
If you’d like to read the report and provide any input before the June 10th deadline, you can send that feedback to directors.office@hpedsb.on.ca.
The draft plan will be presented to trustees for approval at the Enrolment/School Capacity meeting on June 13th and then again at the public board meeting on June 20th.
